Commentary (English version)

The word "Cel" used in the title refers to the celluloid sheets that were used in the production of animation in the past, and in the days when cel was used, cel pictures of characters were layered on top of the background and replaced to make the characters appear to be moving.
This piece was composed based on this technique. While sustaining a pulse as a "background," for example, the music progresses by layering and juxtaposing materials such as different sound forms, acoustics, repetitions of sound forms, and different pulses as "cel pictures," and then shifting from one material to another as needed, as if replacing them.
The use of pulses or near-pulses and the layering and juxtaposition of multiple materials over the course of the music are common in my compositions over the next few years, starting with this piece.

Commentary (Japanese version)

　題名の"Cel"はかつてのアニメ制作において使われていたセルと呼ばれたのセルロイドのシートのことです。セルを用いていた頃のアニメは、背景の上にキャラクターなどを描いたセル画を重ね、それを差し替えながら、キャラクターなどを動いているように見せていました。
　この作品はこの手法からアイディアを得て作曲されました。「背景」として、例えばパルスを持続させながら、その上に「セル画」として別の音形や音響、音形の反復、別のパルスといったマテリアルを重ねていき、並列させ、適宜それらを差し替えるように別のマテリアルへ適宜移行させていくことで音楽を進行させていきます。
　パルスやパルスに近いものを用いることや複数の素材を音楽の経過とともに重ねていくことや並列させていくことは、この作品を皮切りに以降数年間の私の作曲作品によく見られます。
